Easy Chicken Recipe
Our cozy delicious Slow Cooker Garlic Butter Chicken and Potatoes is a family-friendly all-in-one meal to warm you up this winter!
Everyone in my family loves bold spicy flavors… Yet there are days we want to skip the tastebud acrobatics and sink into something that is pure comfort.
Today’s Slow Cooker Garlic Butter Chicken and Potatoes is a simple recipe that gives you the sensation of being wrapped in a big fuzzy blanket. After all, the key ingredients are chicken, baby potatoes, garlic, and butter!
You simply throw the ingredients in the slow cooker and let them mix and mingle over the next few hours. Then open the lid and inhale the tantalizing aroma of hot garlic butter and herbs.
Two Slow Cooking Methods
There are two methods of making Slow Cooker Garlic Butter Chicken and Potatoes…
Method one is the “around the house” method. Start the potatoes in the slow cooker first, so they get a head-start on the chicken. Then add the chicken and remaining ingredients a few hours later, so the chicken is moist and tender, not dry.
The second method is the “off to run errands” method. Here you chop the potatoes in smaller pieces so they can cook thoroughly in the same time it takes to cook the chicken. Chop, dump, and press start!
Either way, you end up with a warm hearty meal the whole family will love.
Slow Cooker Garlic Butter Potatoes with Chicken is an easy recipe to adjust to suit your family’s tastes. You can swap out the herbs to any that you prefer. You can use chicken breasts or boneless thighs. I used both, but actually prefer the thighs.
You can even cut back on the butter to lighten up the recipe… However the more butter the better in my opinion.
No matter how you mix it up, Slow Cooker Garlic Butter Chicken and Potatoes is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

Yes! You can add additional vegetables like carrots and onion to this chicken dinner recipe. Just make sure they are cut into similar sizes as the potatoes so that they cook at the same rate!

If you don’t like (or have) thyme and rosemary, try adding in Italian Seasoning, fresh chopped parsley, marjoram, tarragon, or crushed red pepper flakes.

Have you done this recipe with regular potatoes, not Yukon gold? That’s what I have at home and it snowed last night. Don’t particularly feel like going out to the store haha
Hi Katie,
Yes, classic russet potatoes will work just fine. :)
Hi I’m making this right now but didn’t melt the butter just put it in there does that really matter?
Hi Tammy,
You just want it to coat the chicken and potatoes. If you cut up the butter and it melt down all over them, it should be fine. :)
Can you also just do the “all at once” method and cook for the 6-8 hours on low?
Hi Tristan,
When I’ve tried that the chicken dries out a little. It should be mentioned, all slow cooker vary a bit, so that may not happen in yours. :)
So the potatoes are cooking for a total of 6-8 hours on low in total and the chicken 3-4 hours is that correct?
Hi Lori,
You got it! :)

Thank you for this recipe! I’m making it right now. My house smells wonderful! One question, there is no other liquid besides the melted butter? Thanks!
Hi Joanie,
Yes, the butter is all you need. The chicken will release juices and create liquid.

Can I put butter in with the potatoes for the first couple hrs then add more with the chicken an herbs an garlic!?
Hi Erica,
Absolutely! Let me know what you think, once you try it. :)
Currently cooking for my family. cut the portions in half and switched out rosemary with another herb because this was a last minute use what I had in the freezer meal. Already can tell you it smells AMAZING!! Thanks for the good eat.
Is the skin to be left on the chicken, or will skinless work as well? Thanks.
Hi Stacie,
Chicken with skin-on will have a bit flavor, but I used boneless skinless chicken in this recipe. :)
Can I substitute sweet potato instead of the Yukon gold?
Hi Marcie,
Absolutely! Let me know how it turns out. :)

Can this be transformed into a instant pot recipe?
Hi Susy!
I’m sure you can, but unfortunately I haven’t tried it, so I can’t give you specific instructions. Just thinking through the process, I would try placing the potatoes on the bottom, covered by the chicken and pressure cook on the “meat” setting for 15 minutes. Fingers crossed!
Hello,
if I wanted to add carrots to this would I need to add any liquid or change the cooking time at all?
Thanks!
made this on a busy Valentine’s Day. It’s a good basic recipe that you can season as you like. I ignored the salt/pepper measurements in the recipe but seasoned the chicken with S & P plus garlic and onion powder and sweet paprika. The paprika doesn’t add flavor, but made the chicken look much prettier :-). I might try some curry seasoning next time too for a change and top with chopped peanuts and scallions. I love Chicken crockpot recipes because i don’t have to start them till 2-3 pm with dinner at 6 or 7. Even with 8 cloves of garlic I’m glad I added onion powder and the paprika, so just season the chicken with your favorite combo of seasonings and it should turn out great. I made asparagus as a side and some biscuits since it was valentines day!
I’m making this recipe right now it looks great I’ve been doing a lot of slow cooker recipes from off here on Pinterest it’s wonderful thank you for posting it.
Will it still come out the same if I peel the potatoes first? I can’t eat skins!
Hi Candice,
Absolutely! Peel away. :)
