Why We Love Easy Air Fryer Ribs

First, let’s be clear, we love our classic BBQ Baby Back Ribs recipe. But it does admittedly take a few hours, and sometimes you just don’t have that kind of patience for melt-in-your-mouth ribs.

Enter today’s Air Fryer Ribs recipe – it’s by far the easiest and quickest baby back rib recipe I’ll ever make!

Especially if you are only feeding one or two people, the best way to make tender pull-off-the-bone ribs with a crispy exterior and deep, sweet, meaty flavor is to air fry them. It takes only an hour!

What You Need

  1. You need one large air fryer that has a decent-sized basket that is big enough to hold one full rack of ribs cut into pieces.
  2. You need a rack of baby back pork ribs… A full rack typically includes 10-13 ribs, which is just about perfect for 2 people.
  3. You also need a good quality seasoning rub… This could be an all-purpose meat seasoning blend, or a spice rub more specific to ribs. We love our steak seasoning recipe, and it is fantastic on ribs as well!
  4. You need a good quality barbecue sauce… I always go for a spicy-sweet variety, but choose your favorite BBQ sauce.

That’s it! Let’s get to air fryin’…

Top Recipe Tips

  • Don’t skip on prep! It’s essential that you take the time to remove the membrane, separate the ribs, and pat them thoroughly dry. This ensures the meat is moist, flavorful, and super tender!
  • Baste the ribs only after the first round of cooking. Basting them before wrapping them in foil will create too much moisture and result in mushy meat. No one wants that.
  • You can make this recipe with two racks of ribs to feed 3-4 people. But you’ll need to work in batches as you can only air fry one rack of ribs at a time in a regular-sized air fryer.
  • Start on the lowest end of the cooking time. Then check the ribs for doneness before air frying for any longer so they don’t dry out.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the juicy air-fried ribs with a ramekin of extra barbecue sauce on the side.

Speaking of sides… Meaty pork ribs are perfect to serve with all kinds of side dishes! Make it a classic southern BBQ plate with Homemade Mac and Cheese, Baked Beans (made in the Instant Pot!), Deviled Egg Potato Salad, the best Coleslaw, and a hunk of warm Sweet Cornbread.

Or pair it with any of your favorite comfort foods and summer picnic food sides, like:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make spare ribs in the air fryer?

You can, but you’ll only be able to air fry a few of the larger ribs at a time. Check the size of your air fryer, then purchase ribs that will fit once trimmed and cut into sections.

Are ribs better in the oven or air fryer?

There is no easy answer here… Baby back ribs are, of course, delicious, baked in the oven or cooked in a smoker. But they are just as melt-in-your-mouth scrumptious cooked in the air fryer, and they take less than an hour to prepare, from start to finish. Give it a try and decide for yourself!

How long do ribs take in the air fryer?

Air fry ribs for 30 minutes to cook tender ribs that hold to the bone, or for 35-40 minutes for ribs that are falling off the bone.

What temperature should baby back ribs be cooked to?

Aim for an internal temperature of around 200 degrees F for the most mouthwatering pork ribs. I suggest using a meat thermometer to test for doneness.

How long do cooked ribs last in the refrigerator?

Air fried ribs will keep well in the fridge for up to 3-4 days in an airtight container.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Prep the Ribs: There is a thin skin/membrane on the backside of the ribs that needs to be removed in order for the ribs to absorb the seasoning and pull apart easily. Take a paper towel to grab the edge of the membrane and gently pull it across the entire rack of ribs. If the membrane is holding tight and you cannot remove it this way, use a small knife to scrape the back of the ribs removing as much membrane as possible.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 380°F.
  • Cut the rack of ribs into four equal sections so it’s easier to arrange in the air fryer. Pat them dry with a paper towel.
  • Rub 1 tablespoon of meat seasoning over each section of ribs, coating on all sides.
  • Wrap each section of ribs tightly in foil.
  • Once the air fryer basket is hot, place the wrapped ribs in the air fryer basket. Close the basket and air fry for 30 minutes for tender ribs that hold to the bone, or for 35-40 minutes for ribs that are falling off the bone.
  • Unwrap the foil packages and place the ribs back in the air fryer basket. Slather the ribs with barbecue sauce. Then air fry again for 5- 10 minutes, until the exterior is crispy around the edges.
  • Brush with additional barbecue sauce, if desired, and serve hot.
