Why We Love This Detox Celery Juice Recipe
Detox Celery Juice is a hot topic in the natural health arena. Usually, I’m skeptical when it comes to anything touted as a miracle cure-all. However, as a mom of a daughter who had been sick for two solid years, I was willing to try anything to make her better.
So after dozens of doctors’ appointments, expensive tests and scans, and more specialists with no answers, we moved onto natural healing to look for a cure.
That’s when we discovered Celery Juice.
Please note, I am not a dietitian, doctor, or health expert of any kind. If you have any concerns about your own health, please consult a doctor or healthcare professional.
My Experience with Celery Juice
Drinking celery juice has changed our lives so dramatically that I feel compelled to share our story with you. (Then I’ll show you How To Make Celery Juice, in a few different ways!)
In the fall of 2017, Ava came home from school one day, complaining of severe abdominal pain. Historically, Ava was always healthy, and not inclined to be overly dramatic. So after a couple of days of consistent pain, we decided this was not just a tummy bug, and drove to the doctor’s office.
For weeks our doctor ran all the tests on Ava… And I do mean ALL. However, they came back negative. According to the tests, Ava was not celiac. She also did not have food allergies, diabetes, parasites, a bacterial infection, a blockage, a tumor, or anything else the doctor could test for.
He then passed us on to specialists to determine the problem. Again, no answers whatsoever. All the while, Ava’s discomfort continued and even increased. She was buckled over in pain day after day, breaking down into tears regularly.
I was at my wits’ end. We all were.
After almost two years of daily pain for Ava, and me endlessly searching for answers, a friend told me I should read a book called Liver Rescue by Anthony William.
Liver Rescue explains how all our bodily functions are connected to the liver, our body’s filtration system. If our liver is suffering, due to overexposure to toxins in our food and/or environment, or even stress-induced toxins our bodies create, it will cause a breakdown in other parts of our body.
According to the symptoms listed in the book, this was exactly what was happening in Ava’s body. We decided to give Anthony’s methods a try… Primarily, the lifestyle change of drinking celery juice every day. Ana has since recovered and is no longer in pain thanks to the help of celery juice!

How Is This Possible? According to Anthony William, celery is not a vegetable as we often believe. Celery is an herb with strong medicinal qualities.
In its concentrated form, the natural cluster salts, minerals, antioxidants, and nutrients gently pull toxins out of your body and heal your digestive tract and liver… Therefore healing other ailments connected to digestion and liver health.
Who started the celery juice detox trend?
Drinking celery juice and following a celery juice cleanse has been a natural remedy since the early 1960’s (and maybe even before that.)
However, in recent times Anthony William, AKA the @MedicalMedium, has written multiple books encouraging people to take back their health by drinking celery juice and eating tons of fruit and vegetables.
He has over 3 million Instagram followers and countless converts who share their testimonies all over the web. If you’re dealing with some sort of chronic illness, you should check out his books.
Medical Medium Celery Juice Protocol
In his book Liver Rescue, the Medical Medium suggests this protocol for drinking celery juice…
- Make your celery juice fresh every morning.
- Drink 16 ounces of pure celery juice first, and do not eat or drink anything else for 30 minutes. This allows the celery juice to go through your body medicinally in its concentrated form.
- After 30 minutes, eat raw fruits or veggies to absorb more pure nutrition, before introducing fats into your diet each day.
Anthony William shares a lot more in his book(s) on ways you can cleanse your liver and heal your body. He even has a list of foods to avoid if you struggle with any type of chronic illness. This includes:
- More whole grains and complex carbs like sweet potato, quinoa, and brown rice
- More vegetables and fruits like broccoli, cauliflower, citrus, and berries
- Healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and olive oil
- Sugar detoxes – Less sugar intake (as well as artificial sweeteners) to reduce sugar cravings
Yet the gist of it is pure celery juice, more fruits and veggies, less fats.
If you’ve been sticking with a low-carb (low fruit) high-fat diet, and are noticing health issues, Anthony would say you should reconsider what you’ve been told about carbs… Especially fruit.
Ingredients You Need To Make Celery Juice
Making celery juice at home is so easy to do. It requires one single ingredient (Ahem, celery) and either a juicer or high-power blender.
You do not add water, lemon juice, ginger or any other ingredient.
You simply juice the celery, strain it, and drink it fresh.
Done.
How To Make Celery Juice
As mentioned above, you can make celery juice with a juicer machine, or with a blender. If you’re unsure about drinking celery juice every day, start with blender celery juice. (Most people have blenders.) Then if you find you are making large batches for the whole family each day, like I did, you can invest in a juicer.
To make celery juice in the blender all you need is a high power blender, a fine-mesh strainer, and a glass (or pitcher) to collect the juice.
- Separate and wash the celery stalks. Shake off any extra water.
- Cut the leaves off the top of the stalks. (Most of the bitterness comes from the leaves.)
- Roughly chop the celery into pieces. (If you have a Vitamix or Blendtec, you can probably cut the celery into 3-4 inch segments. Yet if you are unsure how powerful your blender is, chop it smaller.)
- Place the chopped celery in the blender. Make sure the lid is on tight. Blend on high until the celery is smooth mush.
- Place the mesh strainer over a glass or bowl. Pour the celery pulp into the strainer and wait for the juice to separate down below.
- When it starts to slow, press the celery pulp with your hand (or a spoon) to squeeze out all the juice. Discard the pulp and enjoy!
What is the best juicer for celery?
This is the juicer I have. It’s great for cold press juicing. But a friend of mine uses this less expensive one and loves it as well! (Here’s another great easy-clean juicer option.)
There are also inexpensive hand-powered models if you are on a tight budget. I bought this one for travel, and it works very well!
You can also check out my post on the best juicers for celery, where I break down the pros and cons of each!
How To Make Celery Juice With A Juicer
- Separate and wash the celery stalks. Then shake off all extra moisture.
- Cut the leaves off the top of the stalks. (Most of the bitterness comes from the leaves.)
- Then turn on your juicer and feed the celery stalks through the juicer.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Celery Juice Do You Drink Each Day on the Celery Juice Cleanse?
According to the Medical Medium, 16 ounces.
When Do I Drink The Celery Juice Cleanse?
The celery juice cleanse is meant to be ingested in the morning on an empty stomach for the best results. Then I would wait 20 to 30 minutes before drinking anything else.
How Much Celery Does It Take To Make 16 Ounces of Juice?
Usually, it takes one large bunch of celery per 16-ounce glass.
What Does Celery Juice Taste Like?
Like celery! However, it can vary in flavor from bunch to bunch. Some glasses of celery juice are saltier than others. Some have a mild sweetness.
However, the bitterness we sometimes associate with celery is mostly concentrated in the leaves, so cut them off before juicing.
Can’t I Just Eat Celery Instead?
Although raw celery is great for you and offers a lot of fiber, it’s not the fiber that provides the medicinal healing qualities. It’s the juice!
Most of us would never snack on a whole bunch of celery in one sitting. Yet you can get all that nutrition in a single glass of juice.
Will I Feel A Difference If I’m Already Healthy?
If you are young, eat well, exercise, and have no obvious allergies, ailments, or symptoms… You may not notice any difference when you drink celery juice. It’s still a great preventative measure, but if there’s nothing to heal, there will be no major results.
However, if you are struggling with physical symptoms at any age, you might find the results of celery juice miraculous, as Ava did!
Does Celery Have to Be Organic?
No. Organic is always best, but it’s also usually more expensive.
Celery Juice made from conventional celery is better than no celery juice at all. Just wash the stalks well before juicing.
Does Celery Juice Give You the Runs?
LOL! I’ve had so many questions about this on Instagram, where I first shared our celery juice story.
Yes… At first, the celery juice cleanse is going to detox all the crud out of your digestive tract in order to heal the lining of your stomach and intestines. If you eat a classic American diet, there will be some side effects. *wink*
However, as your body gets used to the celery juice, that will go away, and everything will start working properly.
How Long Does It Take Before You See The Results Of Celery Juice?
It depends on what you are dealing with, how long you’ve been dealing with it, and the overall health of your liver.
For us, we all felt changes of this celery juice cleanse begin within 2-4 weeks. (That’s why we kept drinking it!)
However, Ava said she felt completely healed after 5 months into her celery juice journey.
I’ve read stories of people healing themselves of Crohn’s disease and Lymes Disease with celery juice, yet it took 1-2 years to be completely whole.
If you are struggling with your health, commit to one month and see how different you feel. Then you’ll know if it’s worth juicing!

Started doing this diet last week to help my hyperthyroidism, and I have noticed I feel better. Question, can I make a big batch of juice and store it in the fridge? Or does it need to be fresh every day? Either way, I’ll continue doing it!
Hi Cassie,
That’s amazing! Supposedly it loses its potency over time. However, there are weeks when I know I am going to be extremely busy, so I will make a batch of celery juice to last 2-3 days. Hope this helps!
Great recipe, will try tomorrow. Thank you
I had sudden problems with marked indigestion so not sure if it was stomach or liver so started drinking celery juice before I went to bed at 11:00pm (4 hours after meal). I noticed improvement in symptoms after a couple of days so am continuing this regime. Also…I only have a blender so not necessary to have high speed juicer, etc. as I do smoothies & everything else in regular blender. Also the celery leaves (according to info on the web) are more potent than stalks so I liquify them seperately in another container and drink it as well. It is stronger than stalks but palatable.
Thanks for sharing your story and recipe.
Could you tell me what type of menus you followed for bkfst, lunch and dinners?
Meat?
Hi Leticia,
Ava primarily eats a paleo diet with lots of protein, fruit and veggies. You can check out all of our paleo recipes here: https://www.aspicyperspective.com/category/healthy-2/paleo-whole-30/
Hiya, I love how you write down not only the step by step process of how to make the juice but also the benefits in great detail and explained them. I really appreciate that you spent time trying this out, researching the evidence of why this is good for you and then shared it for everyone so we can get all the information we need and how to do it it one post. I definitely want to start this but I’m wondering if I have to drink this every single day or if I can only drink it a couple times a week. If I were to drink it a few times a week would It take longer to see the benefits then it would if I was drinking it every day? Also, in order to drink this everyday how much money would a weeks worth of celery for juicing cost? Thank you for this Blog and have a great day.
Hi Isabella!
I do know people that only drink it 2-3 times a week and still see results. But they also eat REALLY clean diets. We drink it every day, partly for my daughter’s continuing health, and partly because I’m recipe testing several days a week, so we don’t always stick to a strict diet.
As for the cost you can find deals on celery, depending on where you shop. For instance, ALDI sells conventional celery for $1 a bunch and organic for $2 a bunch. Trader Joe’s has organic for just over $2 a bunch. However, some stores sell their organic celery for around $4 a bunch! It takes about one full bunch of celery to make one glass. So if you shop smart you could drink it every day for between $7-14 a week, depending on if you choose to buy organic.
Hope this helps! :)
This blog post gives me SOOOOO much hope. THANK YOU for the informative read!!! CHUGGING my first glass now. Hope I am not up all night on the pooper… :P

Thanks so much for the blender friendly recipe! Can’t wait to try! BUT, I would absolutely love to know where you got your sieve!
Hi Rachel,
I think that one came from Target. :) However, you can find them on Amazon, and online kitchen stores as well.
Can I drink coffee after I wait 30 minutes of drinking the celery juice.
Hi Mary,
Sure! The Medical Medium does have opinions about coffee, but we’ve been drinking it and have still seen major results.

Wonderful information you have shared with us. Thanks for the posting about Juice Recipe.
Thanks for the posting about juice recipe.
How long does this have to be done for? Always? Or is there a rest period?
Hi Diane,
We have now been doing it for over 6 months and plan to drink it forever. :)
However, I think if you are trying to heal yourself from some illness, you could reduce how many times you drink it each week, once you feel healthy again.
Great post and clear instructions on how to make it with a blender. I prefer to use a juicer because its a little more efficient. If anyone is interests in other juicer recommendations, you can check out our post over at https://www.livesimplynatural.com/best-juicer-for-celery/ But the juicers recommended on this post is are top of the line pick as well. Thanks for the informative post!
Thank You! If I happen to make more than the 16oz – can I put in a sealed container (mason jar?) and put in fridge or will the benefits fade before the following morning??
Hi Susanne,
I sometimes make it the night before, if we have a really early start the next day. It is supposed to be BEST to drink it immediately, but lots of people make it in batches for 2-3 days.
why not eat the whole blended celery? Why only the juice????
Hi Gabby,
It would be really difficult to swallow a large glass of celery mush. If you read the post above, I explain all the medicinal qualities are in the juice itself, not in the fiber.
I am 100% signing up for this! Lord knows I have a lot of these things!
I’m so happy you credited the Medical Medium
Love this!!! I squeeze my celery juice through a dish cloth! Just place it over the fine mesh sieve, then once the most of the water has gone through, wrap it up and give it a squeeze!
