Deborah L – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So delicious and simple! The balance of strawberries and bananas is just right, and the texture is so smooth and creamy. I made this for my kids, and they loved it just as much as I did.

Sommer’s Recipe Highlights

A great way to use up leftover fruit – In our house, we freeze our fruit in advance so they are ready on the fly to toss in the blender with milk and yogurt for the creamiest, dreamiest smoothie ever! This way we also never throw out bananas and other fruit that is a little past its best day… It’s a total win-win!

The sweetener is totally optional – I think it is such a shame when smoothie recipes (especially ones containing berries) automatically add sweetener when you might not need it. I’ve made my sweetener options (including the frankly genius idea of using strawberry jam to add sweetness as well as amping up that strawberry flavor) totally optional, added at the end because if your frozen strawberries are ripe enough, you probably won’t need any at all!

Key Ingredients and Tips

  • Frozen bananas and strawberries – I like to take bananas that are getting too ripe, cut them into chunks, and freeze them so they are ready to use, like for my easy banana smoothie recipe. You can also freeze fresh strawberries at their peak for future use. However, you can also use frozen fruit from the grocery store!
  • Yogurt – It is totally up to you if you use whole milk or low fat plain greek yogurt, strawberry, or vanilla yogurt. I tend to use what I have on hand.
  • Milk – I’ve made this recipe with whole, 2% and skim milk, and they all work. You could also incorporate dairy-free milk, like almond or oat milk.
  • Optional sweeteners – If I fancy a sweeter smoothie, I’ve had good results sweetening it with granulated sugar, honey, and even strawberry jam for an extra boost of strawberry flavor! You really shouldn’t need any sweetener if your fruit is ripe, but sometimes store-bought frozen strawberries, in particular, I find a little lacking. Don’t add any sweeteners until after you’ve blended the smoothie. I recommend tasting first so you don’t wind up with a super-sweet drink.

Measure the ingredients – First, I add the frozen bananas, strawberries, yogurt, and milk to my blender. I like to add the liquid ingredients around the edges to help everything blend more easily. Using frozen fruit gives the smoothie a thick, creamy texture without needing any ice, which means every sip is packed with fresh strawberry-banana flavor.

Blitz – Then I blend everything until the smoothie is completely smooth and creamy. Once it’s blended, I give it a taste and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding a little honey, maple syrup, or my preferred sweetener. My favorite tip is to add sweetener gradually; you can always add more, but you can’t take it out!

Serve – I then divide between two large (or three small) glasses and serve immediately, so it’s thick and frosty.

Recipe Variations

  • Change up the frozen fruit – This smoothie recipe works with just about any frozen fruit. I find it to be such a helpful template! Swap out the strawberries and/or banana for frozen blueberries or blackberries (or other berries), cherries, mango, or pineapple. Or you could even add spinach or kale for a tasty green smoothie!
  • Make it dairy-free – Use your favorite plant-based dairy and yogurt alternatives. Non-dairy alternatives like almond milk, soy milk, and coconut milk are great options! Almond milk will make a lighter smoothie, oat milk will make it extra creamy, and coconut milk will add a slightly tropical vibe!
  • Add protein – Give yourself a ‘lil boost of protein by adding a scoop of protein powder, or a few tablespoons of peanut butter (real or powder), or almond butter. Consider flax seeds or hemp seeds for extra nutrition.
  • Add a touch of spice – I think this strawberry banana smoothie is also delicious with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need milk for a smoothie?

If you want to make this smoothie creamy with yogurt, you do really need some sort of liquid dairy (or plant-based alternative)… Blending yogurt with fruit juices or water will likely have a strange consistency and flavor.

Can I make this smoothie ahead? Does it store well?

As it is the frozen fruit, making sure you get a nice cold smoothie, they’re best enjoyed as soon as they’re made! Half the recipe if you want to make just one smoothie.

Is this a good post-workout smoothie?

If you make the variation above with added protein powder, yes, it is!
