Caribbean Way Smoothie King Recipe
My Caribbean Way smoothie king recipe is a refreshing, fruit-packed drink I’m obsessed with. I blend banana, strawberries, and papaya into a smooth, naturally sweet smoothie that’s perfect for hot summer days or a quick energy boost. This easy recipe comes together in minutes and tastes just like your favorite smoothie shop version.

As soon as warm weather begins, we start our cooling-down plans, complete with sprinkler strategizing and, of course, getting excited about the deliciously cold and refreshing drinks and snacks we will enjoy all season. Year after year my go-to drink for getting summer started right has been my version of the “Caribbean Way” smoothie. In college, this was my favorite weekend treat. I would save my extra cash to make sure I could get a giant smoothie at least three or four times a month. Fortunately, I figured out how to make them at home, so I could save money and have them more often! This copycat version, inspired by Smoothie King, is seriously like a taste of tropical paradise with every sip. Plus, I love that gorgeous pink color. If you’ve never tried this recipe, it’s kind of like my simple strawberry smoothie, but seriously elevated thanks to the addition of papaya nectar and a little sugar. My whole family loves this little treat, and I think you will too!

Sommer’s Recipe Highlights
Better than the Original – Some people snub copycat recipes, but let me tell you, this take on the classic Smoothie King version is so much better, and it uses fresh ingredients that are better for you as well.
Quick and Easy – I can make this thick and fruit-packed smoothie in under 5 minutes, making it the perfect treat for when I want to cool down… or sweeten up quickly!
Flavor Explosion – Every sip is loaded with a tropical flavor explosion from those creamy bananas, strawberries, and a bold papaya nectar. To me, it’s truly the perfect combination.
Refreshingly Sweet – There is nothing more refreshing than an ice-cold fruit smoothie that doesn’t require any yogurt, milk, or dairy alternatives! While I do love many cold and creamy dairy drinks, they don’t truly quench your thirst in the heat quite like a juice-based smoothie.
Key Ingredients and Tips
- Banana – I love to use bananas because they add a natural sweetness and they create the creamy texture that this smoothie is known for.
- Strawberries – Not only are these sweet, but they’re also perfectly tangy, and they add a gorgeous pop of color to this recipe!
- Papaya nectar – This is found in the juice section or sometimes the international section of most major grocery chains. If you cannot find papaya nectar, you can substitute it with pineapple or mango juice. The flavor of the smoothie will be quite different, but still perfectly tropical and utterly delicious.
- Turbinado sugar – Even a pinch of this stuff adds just the right amount of sweetness without any of that “artificial” taste.
How to Make

Blend the fruit – I grab a blender and toss in the peeled banana chunks, hulled strawberries, papaya nectar, and sugar. Then I cover the jar and puree it all until it’s very smooth and creamy.

Add ice – Finally, I add in a cup and a half of ice and blend again. That’s it!
I serve this cold with a fun straw!

Recipe Variations
- Extra creamy – If you want this smoothie a bit creamier, add in a dollop of yogurt or a splash of coconut milk! Sometimes I even freeze coconut milk in ice trays to throw in for a thicker, frostier version.
- Tropical boost – Mix in some mango, pineapple, or fresh cubed papaya for added tropical flavor.
- Protein – For a post-workout smoothie, stir in a scoop or two of vanilla-flavored protein powder.
- Ice cream – Turn this into a full-scale dessert by adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream! You can either blend it up like a fruity milkshake or serve it as a float.
Serving Suggestions
I love this smoothie on warm days or after work when I need a boost of energy to keep going. My favorite way to drink this is in a chilled tall glass with a big straw. Here are some of my other preferred ways to serve this smoothie:
- As a smoothie bowl topped with some crunchy granola and coconut flakes.
- As a dessert, topped with some whipped cream.
- As a quick breakfast, pair it with some simple over easy eggs, or bacon and cheese egg bites.

Storing
I generally recommend serving this smoothie as soon as it’s ready; otherwise, it gets watery if it sits out. You can also freeze this smoothie in an ice cube tray and then blend it up with some milk.
Frequently Asked Questions
For a thicker Caribbean Way smoothie, you can use frozen fruit in place of fresh. Slice and freeze the banana and strawberries an hour before preparing the smoothies, or you can use store-bought frozen fruit.
If the smoothie is slightly too thick and isn’t blending properly, try adding a splash or two of water at a time and blending again.
Yes, you can, but I don’t think it quite has the same fresh taste after it’s thawed.

Just made this on Father’s Day. Tastes almost exactly like the Carribbean Way from Smoothie King, even if I used the mango nectar instead.
