It’s Fry-Day… Let’s skip plain ketchup or mayo and whip up my rich, creamy, tangy french fry dipping sauce instead! I love how easy it is to make this irresistible sauce in 5 minutes with simple ingredients, yet it tastes like a deluxe condiment from my favorite fast casual restaurant. This is by far the best fry sauce when I want something quick, flavorful, and satisfying.

French fries are one of my weaknesses when it comes to good-but-not-great-for-you snack foods. I simply can’t resist crispy on the outside, tender and pillowy on the inside, french fried potatoes. I already have my favorite French fry seasoning recipe on the site, and today I’m sharing with you the other side of my obsession, the creamiest, most delicious sauce for dunking fries! This french fry sauce starts with simple pantry staples, then I add a few other basic ingredients, like yellow mustard and garlic powder, to elevate the cozy and creamy sauce to another level of irresistibility.

Sommer’s Recipe Highlights

Amazing Flavor – This recipe has a mayonnaise base to give it a creamy consistency and tang, then I add a little ketchup for sweetness and deep tomato flavor, and just a touch of yellow mustard for a bright, tangy pop. Finally, a smidge of garlic and onion powder gives some extra depth to the dip. It makes even the most humble bag of frozen fries taste restaurant-quality.

Fast and Convenient – Most likely, you have all the necessary ingredients in your fridge and pantry right now, and can mix together this perfect dipping sauce in mere minutes. Whether I’m heating up store-bought fries or making them from scratch, I prepare my sauce while the fries bake and have it ready to go when they come out of the oven.

One Sauce, Endless Dippers – I could talk all day about how fabulous this sauce is for dipping french fries (ok, but seriously). But that’s not all! The savory, tangy, umami-riffic flavors and creaminess make it a delightful dip for everything from other fried snacks to fresh veggies. I often keep a container of it in the fridge to use like any other condiment!

Key Ingredients and Tips

  • Mayonnaise – Use your favorite brand of creamy and smooth mayo. I’ve been using Duke’s real mayonnaise forever.
  • Ketchup and Mustard – The ketchup is, well, ketchup. I use classic burger-style yellow mustard for a tangy, pleasantly sour taste that goes well with the zippy ketchup and rich mayo.
  • Spices – There’s already salt in the ketchup, so I use just garlic powder and onion powder to season the sauce.

How to Make

Find the full ingredient proportions, detailed instructions, storage tips, and a video tutorial in the printable form at the bottom of the post.

Add Ingredients to Bowl – I only use one small bowl to make the sauce. I scoop in the mayo into the mixing bowl, squirt in the ketchup and mustard, and sprinkle in spices.

Mix Until Smooth – Then I stir everything together. I recommend using a silicone spatula so you can really get every bit of the sauce mixed until it’s nice and smooth.

Ready to Serve…Or Not – Now you have the choice of serving the creamy dip right away at room temperature, or refrigerating until later. If you choose to chill it in the fridge, cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the sauce into an airtight container.

Serving Suggestions

Not to overstate the obvious, but this fry dip is made for fries.

If given the chance, I like to make homemade fries, like crispy julienne fries and sweet potato fries. But we don’t always have time to make batches from scratch, now do we? That’s when I bake up some frozen fries and go on about my life.

Really, you can dip any of your favorite dippers in here…Veggies, polenta fries, onion rings, chicken wings and tenders and nuggets, you name it. And with mayo, ketchup, and mustard all here, it’s also perfect to slather on hamburgers or drizzle over air fryer hotdogs!

Storage Notes

Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5–7 days. Make sure you give it a quick stir before using, as the ingredients may separate slightly over time. I think the sauce is best enjoyed cold; others like it more at room temperature, but either way, it shouldn’t sit out for more than an hour or so.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make it spicy?

Sometimes I like to give the fry sauce a little heat by adding in a sprinkle (or two, or three) of spicy cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce. If you’re looking for an even spicier dip for dunking fries, check out my comeback sauce recipe made with Cajun seasoning.

Can I halve the amount?

Sure! This recipe makes a little over a cup of sauce, or 8-10 servings. Halve the ingredients to make 4-5 servings.

How much is a serving of fry sauce?

One serving is about 2 tablespoons, or about 1 ounce.
