Sommer’s Recipe Notes

Sliders a.k.a. mini sandwiches, are the perfect party food when you want to serve something a bit more satisfying than just “typical” snack foods like chips and dip. For example, our recipe for Philly Cheesesteak Sliders with beef gives guests more than a mouthful – but still without the hassle of serving a true meal.

Similarly, Ham and cheese sandwiches are an iconic casual food, but not exactly party-friendly. So we turned them into sliders! Normally, they’d be great on their own as mini sandwiches… But place them on delicate buttery King’s Hawaiian rolls and drench them in honey butter before baking, and you have something completely irresistible!

Why You’ll Love This King’s Hawaiian Sliders Recipe

  • Little Sammies, Big Flavors – These handheld delights feature fluffy sweet rolls and ham balanced with tangy Dijon mustard, cheddar cheese, crunchy dill pickles, and a layer of golden honey butter inside and brushed on top of each ‘lil bun.
  • Easy 30 Minutes – The sliders come together with some simple layering of ingredients and bake in the oven until golden brown. They are ready to serve in as little as half an hour.
  • Feeds a Crowd – This recipe makes 12 sliders, but you can churn out however many you need by simply repeating the recipe and baking to order as your guests continue to par-tay!
  • Protein Pointer – If you are trying to squeeze extra protein into your diet, you can double or triple the ham on the sliders.

This classic party snack is so easy to make for summer holidays, casual gatherings, game day, potlucks, and picnics… Or for just a fun dinner to change up your usual weeknight routine!

Ingredients and Tips

  • King’s Hawaiian Rolls – Use your choice of King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls or more mild Butter Rolls.
  • Filling – These beauties are loaded with slices of deli ham (like honey ham or tavern ham), extra sharp white cheddar cheese, dijon mustard, and crisp dill pickle slices.
  • Honey-butter – This is a simple combo of unsalted butter, honey, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Recipe Variations

  • Protein – Swap ham with lean chicken or turkey deli slices.
  • Cheese – Feel free to use classic orange cheddar cheese, Colby jack, pepper jack, or Swiss cheese.
  • Pickles – I like the balance of tangy dill pickles. But you can bump up the sweetness by using bread and butter pickles, or make the sliders with some heat and use spicy pickles (like Wickle’s Pickles).
  • Mustard – We use Dijon mustard for the more robust, tangy flavor. However, you can swap this out for classic Cuban sandwich-style yellow mustard if you prefer.
  • Honey-butter glaze – For a serious kick, consider swapping regular honey with a drizzle of our homemade version of Mike’s Hot Honey sauce to make the melted butter mixture.
  • Poppy Seeds – Add a nice pop of crunch and sprinkle some poppy seeds onto the baked rolls after basting them with the melted honey butter.
Recipe ingredients: Bag of King's Hawaiian sweet rolls, package of sliced cheese, deli sliced ham, bottle of mustard and jar of pickles.

How to Make Kings Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders

Tips for Success – You do not need to separate the sweet Hawaiian rolls individually, as they can bake in one solid sheet…

However, you can separate the roles individually if you prefer them that way. I just find that it’s just easier to assemble them if they’re all in one solid sheet. Just be sure to use a serrated knife to cut them into tops and bottoms.

Storage Notes

  • Storing Leftovers – The bread will get a bit soggy, but you can save leftover ham and cheese sliders for a day or two in the fridge in an airtight container.
  • Reheating – Enjoy the sliders cold, or pop them on a baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes at 350 degrees F.

Serving Suggestions

These Hawaiian roll sandwiches are delicious with classic picnic and potluck side dishes! Serve them up with Hawaiian macaroni pasta salad, potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans for a crowd-pleasing summer meal.

They’re also a fun main dinner dish any night of the week! Pair the sliders with sweet potato fries or crunchy onion rings, plus a green salad, to make them the star of a meal packed with flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep the sliders from getting soggy?

First, baking the sweet rolls by themselves creates a nice toasty layer on the inside top and bottom layers. This dry toasty-ness helps keep the hot ham and cheese sliders from getting soggy once the other ingredients are loaded on.

How many sliders are in a serving?

2 sliders are generally considered a serving. This Kings Hawaiian sliders recipe makes a total of 12 mini sandwiches, so approximately 6 servings.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces Kings Hawaiian rolls Original Sweet or Butter
  • 12 large deli ham slices or 24 small slices
  • 6 slices white cheddar cheese or provolone, swiss, or American
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 26 dill pickle slices

Honey-Butter Glaze –

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Set out a rimmed baking sheet and line it with parchment paper.
  • Pull the whole “sheet” of King’s Hawaiian rolls out of the packaging and remove the cardboard base. Using a serrated bread knife, to carefully cut the rolls in half creating tops and bottoms for the sliders. *You do not need to separate the rolls individually, they can bake in one solid sheet. (See photos for further clarification.)
  • Place the roll tops and bottoms on the baking sheet, open so the cut-side is exposed.
  • Set out a small microwave-safe mixing bowl. Combine the butter, honey, and garlic powder. Microwave for 1-2 minutes until the butter is fully melted and the glaze can be stirred together easily. Stir and taste, then salt and pepper as needed.
  • Brush honey butter over the cut surfaces of the rolls. Make sure to only use about half of the honey butter so the rest can be used as the glaze over the tops.
  • Bake the rolls for 4-5 minutes to toast the interior.
  • Once the rolls come out of the oven, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the roll tops.
  • Cut the six cheese slices into quarters, so you have 24 small pieces of cheese. Fold the pieces of ham so they are close to the same size as the rolls.
  • Place one piece of cheese on each roll bottom, followed by a folded slice of ham, 2-3 pickles, and top with a second slice of cheese.
  • Carefully move the slider tops back over the mini sandwiches.
  • Brush the remaining honey butter glaze over the top of the rolls.
  • Place the sliders back in the oven and bake for 7-10 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted, and the glazed tops are crisp and slightly bubbly.
