Sommer’s Recipe Highlights

Health benefits – The health benefits of ginger are impressive! Ginger contains vitamin C, antioxidant properties, antibacterial properties to fight bacteria, relieves nausea, and contains anti-inflammatory properties. PLUS, gingerroot helps regulate your digestion, is a natural pain reliever, it boosts your immune system, helps regulate your blood sugar levels, helps reduce cholesterol, and some say it even helps with weight loss.

Batch friendly – I love to make batches of this ginger drink and store it either as individual shots or in a carafe in the fridge so that I have it available whenever I want.

Simple ingredients – With just a handful of fresh and pure ingredients you can make this seriously refreshing wellness shot that’s ready in a couple of minutes!

Key Ingredients and Tips

  • Ginger – Fresh ginger roots are the star of the show when it comes to this recipe. I always, always use the fresh kind.
  • Lemon juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds just the right amount of tanginess to every sip of this detox drink.
  • Coconut water – To get a subtle and sweet finish, I prefer to use coconut water over regular water, but you can totally go for the latter if you prefer!
  • Honey – And just a little bit of honey hits the spot. I use the smooth and pourable kind, not the super thick raw honey, just because I think it’s harder to mix.
  • Cayenne – This is totally optional, but oh, do I LOVE a spicy kick! I always add a pinch of cayenne pepper to this drink for a fiery finish.
  • Turmeric – This is also optional, but turmeric has so many anti-inflammatory benefits and it adds an earthy flavor.

How To Make

Prep the ginger – Firs thing is first, I always start off by washing the ginger root and chopping it into large chunks. Once I throw those into the blender, I also add in the lemon juice, coconut water, honey and some cayenne pepper.

Blend away – Now comes the fun part. Hit the power button and blend away until all of the ingredients are smooth.

Strain – I pour the blended ginger mix into a strainer just to make sure that none of the pulp makes its way into my drink. Sometimes it helps to push the pulp down with a spoon to get all of the juices through.

Pour and enjoy – Finally, I pour myself the strained juice into a shot glass and serve it right away.

Recipe Variations

  • Orange juice – Swap the lemon for fresh orange juice to a get a slightly sweeter shot that’s delicious for breakfast.
  • Pineapple juice – Instead of lemon, you can also use pineapple juice for a tropical-inspired twist.
  • Black pepper – Replace the cayenne with black pepper for a bit of heat that isn’t quite so bold.
  • Sweeteners – Not a fan of honey? No problem — use maple syrup or agave instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make ginger shots ahead of time?

This recipe is most potent when made fresh daily. However, you can make several batches ahead of time and serve them throughout the week. The ginger juice will last up to a week kept in the refrigerator.

When should you drink a ginger shot?

I recommend enjoying an immunity ginger and turmeric shot early in the morning, on an empty stomach, before you’ve eaten breakfast. This will allow your stomach to fully absorb all of the nutrients from the drink, and set your tummy up for digestive success the rest of the day.

Are you supposed to drink a whole ginger shot?

Yes… But how you enjoy it is totally up to you! Drink the potent shot sip-by-sip, or throw it back in one gulp or two. If the spiciness is an issue for you, drinking it fast is the way to go.

Can I use a juicer instead of a blender to make this recipe?

Yes, you can. Use the juicer to press the ginger (and turmeric), and then mix the liquid with the rest of the ingredients.

Storing

This ginger juice will last up to 1 week in the fridge when stored in an airtight container.
