Mango Con Chile (Chile Lime Mango and Papaya)
SPICY Chile Lime Mango and Papaya. Fruit with attitude. Certain recipes are almost too easy to mention. Yet, it’s the simple ideas that we all long for in this crazy whirl-wind we call life.
Mango Con Chile
Some of these recipe concepts are so good, that they have no boundaries and are shared across cultures, borders, and even oceans.
This little snack is something I’ve eaten on the streets of many countries with tropical climates. Whether in Central America or Southeast Asia, spicy fruit is a beloved treat.
In Mexico, whole mangoes are commonly served on a stick with lime juice and chile powder. In several South American and Asian countries, mangoes, ripe papayas, and even unripe green papayas are served sliced with a spicy sprinkle over the top.
Here I’ve combined the best of both continents for a snack that can satisfy any craving… sweet, salty, or spicy.
What Ingredients You Will Need
- Some Ripe Mangoes
- Some Small PapayasÂ
- Granulated Sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon Chile Powder – preferably ancho powder
- Pinch of Cayenne
- Zest of a Lime
What Equipment You Will Need
- Sharp Knife
- Spoon
- Small Bowl
How To Make This Real Fruit Flavor Experience
Even my little ones love the vibrant combination of the perky fruit and deep flavorful heat.
How to Prepare: Simply peel and slice the mangoes and papayas.
Cut the flesh of the mangoes off the pit. Run a small knife around the interior of the peel to remove it. Cut the papayas in half and scoop out the seeds. Then remove the peel in the same manner as the mangoes.
Slice the mangoes and papayas into thick strips.
Mix the sugar, salt, spices, and lime zest in a small bowl.
Sprinkle the seasoning for papaya and mango slices on top of the fruit. Serve immediately.
Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Do Leftovers Last?
The fruit itself can last in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. I do not suggest storing the fruit with the seasoning on it. However, if you do, it can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.Â
What Other Fruit Can I Use This With?
In many other Spanish-speaking countries like Nicaragua and Costa Rica, they have a seasoning similar to this chile-lime salt and they use it on many fruits.Â
You can sprinkle this on pineapple, watermelon, popsicles (paletas), eggs, and even on the rim of your alcoholic beverages (like beer and margaritas).

I’ve enjoyed browsing your blog. I especially enjoyed reading about Okie Dokie BBQ restaurant in Asheville. I used to visit Asheville alot when I was a student at ASU in Boone. The chile, lime mango and papaya fruit salad looks delicious. Would you like to be a guest post on my blog with this recipe? I’m always looking for good recipes.

I’ve been away from your blog for too long! This looks so good. I always enjoy mangoes and papayas while traveling in Brazil, though I haven’t seen them add spices. Spicy food for the most part hasn’t really caught on there yet. I am sure that I’d love this simple dish. It is so cute the way you prepared it: it looks like a cone of sweet potato fries.
I think Savory Spice just opened a shop in Asheville. You can get this amazing honey sugar there, perfect for this dish.
Mmm this looks beautiful and delicious. I enjoy a similar combination with watermelon!
My husband would love this. Thanks!
There’s nothing like fresh, tropical fruit with chili and lime on top. A burst of wonderful flavors in your month! Since I don’t have any trips to Latin America or South/SE Asia lined up anytime soon, I’ll have to make your recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Sommer, I know I can always count on you for a delicious recipe and a photo, or five, that will make me drool! Wish I was the kid in the photo holding all that deliciousness. :)
