Why We Love This Limoncello Spritz Recipe

A great summer cocktail should be fruity, refreshing, boozy, and – did we mention? – refreshing! This simple limoncello spritz recipe is a fabulous summertime beverage that checks all of the boxes.

You may see limoncello spritzer recipes with more ingredients… But if you buy good-quality Prosecco and good-quality Limoncello, these two ingredients are all you need. Any other ingredients added just compensates for the lack of quality in the two key ingredients.

That being said, we do love to include a slice of lemon and herbs to really elevate the flavors and appearance of the lemon spritzer. All together this sparkling, fizzy, and sweet adult beverage from Italy is the perfect daytime (or anytime) cocktail to sip by a pool, on the patio, at brunch, or anywhere you happen to be enjoying a warm day!

Ingredients You Need

  • Limoncello – chilled in the fridge or freezer
  • Prosecco – extra dry, also chilled
  • Ice – small-to-medium sized cubes or pieces are best

Pro Tips: Buy high-quality limoncello and prosecco for the best flavor.

No garnish is required to make a limoncello spritz. However we like to at least add a lemon slice to each glass. A sprig of fresh basil, rosemary sprigs, thyme, or fresh mint sprig is also a nice touch!

You can also add berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries.

How to Make a Limoncello Spritzer

Set out a wine glass that has a stem, so warm hands don’t touch the actual glass.

Fill the glass about halfway with ice cubes. I recommend small-to-medium sized cubes as crushed ice tends to melt quickly.

Hand adding limoncello into wine glasses half full of ice.

Pour the limoncello to the glass and stir well.

Then add the Prosecco and stir again, but not so much that you “deflate” all of the fizzy bubbles.

We like to finish each glass off by garnishing with a fresh lemon slice, plus a sprig of fresh basil, rosemary, or mint. These garnishes are optional and can be left off, but they really add a nice ‘lil something extra that you’ll love!

Serve the cocktails immediately before the ice melts.

Recipe Variations & Tips

  • There are several types of Prosecco you can use in a limoncello spritz. As noted above, we like a dry Prosecco that’s on the sweeter side. But feel free to use an extra dry or Brut variation that’s ultra dry and not very sweet, if you prefer your limoncello spritzer to be more tart. Really, you can use any type of sparkling white wine you want.
  • Limoncello is the classic option, but there are actually many other types of -ello liquors! Use this basic recipe but swap out the main alcohol to make a spritz with Arancello (orange liquor) or Argumello (mixed citrus liquor).
  • Do not make these drinks ahead of time. Prosecco is best poured fresh and bubbly! Thankfully, the cocktails are quick and easy enough to whip up in a snap as needed.
  • As-is this lemon spritzer recipe makes one drink. Simply multiply the ingredients to serve your guests.
  • Make you beverage more or less lemony to taste. We used a 2 parts prosecco to 1 parts limoncello ratio for a well balanced taste. However, this easy cocktail can be customized to your preferences.
  • Easily make this a mocktail spritzer recipe! Swap limoncello with lemonade and top with your favorite sparkling lemon water, soda water or club soda.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is limoncello stronger than Aperol?

Limoncello is a good bit more stout than Aperol. Aperol has about a 10% ABV (alcohol by volume) while limoncello liquor is more around the 30% range.

What kind of alcohol is limoncello?

Traditional limoncello is a citrusy liquor that’s made by infusing vodka or grain alcohol with fresh lemon peels. Some simple syrup is usually added as well to make the drink a bit sweeter and balance the sharp alcohol taste.

What does limoncello taste like?

You very much taste the lemon in this Italian lemon liqueur! It’s delightful tartness is mellowed by the sweetener, but that citrus flavor is still front and center.

Do you keep limoncello in the fridge?

An unopened bottle will keep well on the shelf for at least two years. But once it has been opened to make a limoncello spritz cocktail, it’s best to keep the liquor in the refrigerator. Personally, I like to always keep it in the fridge—even before opening—so that it’s perfectly cold and crisp for sipping.
