My Love Affair with Stromboli

Let me tell you about my first experience with Stromboli, that magical pizza-like savory pastry stuffed with gooey, molten cheese and zesty, fragrant tomato sauce.

It seems so long ago now, but I remember it as if it were yesterday…

The brisk wind whipped leaves around my ankles as I pushed open the door of a small Italian cafe. The aromas of garlic and yeast mingled with sugar and coffee, brought on a strange sensation of both exhilaration and ease.

I swept my disheveled hair out of my face, sat down at a table, and focused on the deli case. What would it be today? Panini? A cannoli? Thumbprint cookies maybe?

Then I saw something that captured my attention. A loaf, of sorts, obviously stuffed with filling. But this was no pastry or hand pie. This was enormous and inviting with a hearty crust. Just the kind of thing to nosh on a chilly day.

I walked up to the counter and waited my turn. When asked what I would like to order I answered, “May I ask what that is?”

“Strrrom-bo-li.”

“What is inside of it?”

“Everrrrything wonderful” she replied.

That was all I needed to know. I bought the entire Stromboli loaf, ate two warm slices there in the cafe, then took the rest home to share with my roommates. Thus begun my love-affair with Stromboli.

What is Stromboli?

Stromboli is basically an Italian rolled bread loaf that is slathered with tomato sauce and filled with cheese, cold cuts and/or vegetables. The dough is usually a pizza dough, and when sliced the ingredients are revealed inside as an enticingly lovely pinwheel.

This dish is fully customizable, kinda like your favorite pizza toppings; but today I’ll be sharing what is IMO the BEST version, a Classic Italian Stromboli Recipe.

Italian Ingredients

What Ingredients Are In Our Homemade Stromboli Recipe

This easy Stromboli recipe makes a large golden loaf that is perfect to take on picnics or to a party.

When sliced, the yummy swirling pieces reveal a little bit of “everything wonderful” inside.

Here are the ingredients you need:

  • Pizza Dough – This envelops all the other ingredients in a pillowy swirl, and basically makes it easier for you to eat it all. You can use pre-made store bough dough, or try our recipe for How to Make Pizza Dough From Scratch!
  • Italian Sausage – Already cooked and crumbled this will help fill you up. This recipe is a great way to use extra sausage from your weekly meal prep.
  • Artichoke Hearts – Tender and tangy, make sure to thoroughly drain these before filling the dough with them.
  • Basil Leaves – Slightly sweet, slightly peppery. This is a classic addition to Italian dishes.
  • Green Olives – If green olives aren’t your thing, you can always use black olives. No judgement!
  • Mozzarella Cheese – Molten cheese is absolutely necessary for this comforting dish.
  • Marinara – Zesty tomato sauce to help flavor it all. Make it homemade or use from a jar. It can also be used on the side for dipping the Stromboli.

How To Make Homemade Stromboli Like A Pro

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out the pizza dough on a piece of parchment paper and into an 11 X 15 inch rectangle.
  2. Spread 1/2 cup marinara over the dough, leaving a 2-inch border around all sides.
  3. Top the marinara with fresh basil leaves. Layer the sausage, olives, artichokes and cheese over the basil leaves.
  4. Then, lifting the parchment paper, gently roll one short end toward the other short end, creating a log with the seam facing down.
  5. Brush the loaf with melted butter, then sprinkle with pepper. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown. Allow the Stromboli to rest 10 minutes before slicing.

Easy enough, right?
