This summer we’ve made the most of every opportunity to get people together. Our most memorable party (so far) was a Caribbean themed neighborhood potluck in June.

Lt. Dan and I were in charge of providing a main dish and cocktails, while our neighbors all made Caribbean side dishes.

I was so impressed by the bold and colorful dishes our friends brought over, covering a wide array of islands and nationalities. My kitchen counters were covered with plantain dishes, Caribbean style rice and beans, slaws, salads, salsa, island curries… It was truly a marvelous collaborative meal.

Although our guests enjoyed our main dish, what I really got complements on were our Caribbean cocktails!

First I made a large batch of a fruity pink party punch we discovered in the Abaco Islands, called the Bahamian Blaster.

Yet I wanted to offer another option that was less sweet, and had a totally different flavor profile. After mixing and sipping for quite I while, the Stormy Donkey Party Punch came into existence.

This combination of part “Dark and Stormy” cocktail and part “Moscow Mule” brings together fresh lime juice, zingy ginger beer, vodka, and aged rum (either spiced or dark) with a couple extra add-ins for tropical appeal.

The addition of pineapple juice and freshly grated nutmeg give the Stormy Donkey Party Punch extra depth and a touch of sweetness, without over shadowing the original flavors.

The result, was a intriguing large batch cocktail that seemed slightly more sophisticated than the sweeter fruity pink punch. The two together made quite an impact on our party guests.

In fact they enjoyed them so much, the next day I was told by a couple neighbors that they felt like they had been kicked by a stormy donkey!

Stormy Donkey Party Punch is a fabulous beverage to serve at all your summer parties, and even into the fall. The ginger beer and nutmeg give it a lovely transitional quality.

Lt. Dan would tell you that while the Bahamian Blaster was delicious, the Stormy Donkey Party Punch was a man’s Caribbean punch, if ever a thing existed.

What’s the best sized punch bowl to use?

I always recommend going for a large punch bowl especially if you’re making this party punch for a big crowd. 12 quarts is a great size that should account for a lot of people. This set from Party Essentials is one of the best punch bowls I’ve found, and it sells for around $50 on Amazon.

How to serve punch without a punch bowl

If you don’t have a punch bowl, you can use a more basic but effective beverage dispenser, like this too-cute large mason jar model that sells for around $30 on Amazon.
