Are you ready?

It’s a good idea to have a few sure-thing – dare I say “touchdown” – party dishes in your bag of tricks this year, including our Hot Onion Dip with Homemade French Fried Onions.

Hot Onion Dip

The Best Homemade Hot Onion Dip Recipe

When I’m hosting a gathering, I plan to serve a minimum of three appetizers, to make sure there is something for everyone.

This generally consists of something hot, something cold, something healthy, something meaty, and something cheesy… with at least 2 of these having more than one qualifying attribute.

Today I’m serving up something hot and cheesy, a spin on the old classic hot onion dip.

This is one of my favorite retro dishes: the BEST hot, gooey onion dip with just hint of spice. Then topped with crispy, decedent, french fried onions, so when you dip your chip into it, you get oozy cheese and a little extra crunch to boot!

I think my grandmother used to make this onion dip…

I think your grandmother used to make this onion dip. But the homemade french fried onions are my spin on the classic and make it so hard to resist.

One of the many reasons this homemade Hot Onion Dip is among my go-to party recipes is because of how simple the ingredients list is. The dip has layers upon layers of flavors, but only consists of a handful of wholesome essentials.

How to Make Hot Onion Dip with Homemade French Fried Onions

  1. Make the Onion Dip – Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Mix together the softened cream cheese, diced onion, mayo, Parmesan, cayenne and cumin in a large bowl. Then scoop into a round baking dish and smooth evenly. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes.
  2. Make Fried Onions – While the dip is in the oven, heat the oil in a large, deep sauce pot, to about 375 degrees F. Slice the onions into thin strips and place in the buttermilk to soak. In a shallow dish, mix the flour, salt and pepper. Once the oil is hot, drain the onions from the buttermilk and toss in the flour mixture to evenly coat. Shake of the excess four and carefully dunk all the onions into the hot oil.
  3. Fry the onions for 1-2 minutes, until golden brown; scoop out with a skimmer and place them on a plate lined with paper towels. Sprinkle generously with additional salt.
  4. Complete the Onion Dip with Fried Onions – Remove the hot onion dip from the oven and sprinkle the French fried onions over the top. Place back in the oven for 5 more minutes, until the dip is bubbly and cooked through.

You definitely want to serve this savory homemade onion dip nice and hot, with plenty of chips, cracker, and veggies!

Can This Hot Onion Dip Be Made in Advance?

This recipe is perfect for making a day or so before serving, and keeps well covered in the fridge for 4-5 days. I do recommend, however, that you keep the crispy fried onions separate from the onion dip until you are actually ready to enjoy hot.

You can make the onion dip in advance, and then quickly whip up the homemade fried onions while the dip reheats in the oven before your guests arrive.

Or make the French fried onions ahead of time with the onion dip, and just keep the fried onions in an airtight container at room temperature until it’s time to heat the dip to serve.

Super easy!

Is This Dip Recipe Gluten Free?

Because of the flour used to make the French fried onions, no, this hot onion dip recipe is not gluten free. However, you can certainly make these fried onions using your favorite wheat flour alternatives!

Rice flour is a great gluten free swap that would probably work well for frying onions. If you give it a try, let me know your results in the comments!
