A Spicy Perspective

Choosing Cabinetry For Your Home

We’re sharing our experience in Choosing Cabinetry For Your Home today, as it pertains to our new office and photography studio.

Office Remodel Reveal! #DIY #homeimprovement

On Tuesday we shared the big reveal of our latest home project, remodeling our detached garage into the new ASP Headquarters.

Prior to the project, we would stand in the empty garage and dream about what it could look like and how it might meet our needs as a new work space.

The garage had good bones… a vaulted ceiling, skylights, and old-style french doors instead of regular garage doors. But what we really needed was storage, and lots of it.

We wanted the new office to have a clean modern feel, yet not clash with our 80+ year old house.

With your help we selected a timeless cabinet style from Shenandoah Cabinetry called Solana, in the Mocha Maple finish. Then we paired it with clean modern draw pulls.

Shenandoah is sold exclusively at Lowes, where the design team does a phenomenal job digitally building the plans for your new office (or kitchen or bathroom). The design process is painless… actually, it’s fun! We talked with a designer about our specific needs and she came up with several options for us to consider.

We chose to go with tall cabinetry against the two side walls, and a large double-sided desk down the middle of the room.

The cabinets are expansive enough to house all my dishes and props. You can see, the pretty pieces are displayed on open shelves, but I have tons of closed cabinets and drawers for photography equipment, and office supplies.

Then we left open space in the front, by the garage doors, for me to roll my photography table around to shoot in the best light.

Doesn’t it look amazing?

Shenandoah Cabinetry is so sturdy, we know it will last for years to come. It may even outlive us!

So we want to share a few tips we’ve learned about Choosing Cabinetry For Your Home. Now that we’ve remodeled our kitchen and office, we’re practically experts on the matter. *wink*

Choosing Cabinetry For Your Home

  • Consider the lighting in the room when selecting a cabinetry finish. Dark cabinetry offers richness to a space, but darken it down as well. Light cabinets reflect light and give a space an open airy feel.
  • Don’t choose a cabinetry style for your home based on popular opinion. When trends change you’ll be stuck with last season’s style… for years. Select a cabinetry style and finish you know you will not get tired of over time. Purchasing new cabinetry is like getting married. You need to take your decision seriously.
  • On the flip-side, draw pulls are something that can be easily swapped out. Think of it as accessorizing, and pick handles that express your personal style. If you want to change them out a few years down the road, you can give your cabinetry a whole new look for minimal investment.
  • Plan with purpose. Before you meet with the designer at Lowes, think about how you would like to use your space, what you need to store, and how you want to feel in your new room. The designer can implement storage options and customized features that will help you love your new space for years to come.

You can see all of Shenandoah’s door styles, finishes, and handle options on their website, or at Lowes!

  1. I’ve setup my studio by combining some mismatched pieces I found in antique shops but your studio reminds me a lot of my new kitchen and it’s interesting. I bought a new home and think I’m one of the few that wasn’t swayed by the models that all feature the latest trend…super dark cabinets and flooring. I went with cabinets very much like yours and did hardwood flooring in the same color…all builder standards so no ‘upgrade’ fee involved. Everyone who comes into my home comments on how much they love the color and how big and bright my kitchen is! Maybe it was the years I spent painting all of the dark cabinets and trim in my old home but I knew how much that ‘dark’ feel impacted the space and am so glad I stuck to my guns.

I also opted out of having the builder install hardware and just purchased European handles that look similar to yours…so clean looking and functional. Love the red accents and I’m not typically the ‘red’ type! Your entire space looks gorgeous!

  2. Your new office space is just beautiful and your cabinet choice is perfect here. Only wish my office were so organized. It’s inspiring!
