 Carolina Red Slaw Recipe, complements of the famed Okie Dokies Smokehouse in Asheville, North Carolina. The absolute BEST red slaw recipe in the south!


  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 5 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2-3 green cabbages (5 pounds total)


  1. Chop the cabbage into thin strips and place in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl mix the rest of the ingredients until smooth. Pour over the cabbage and mix well. Allow the red slaw to sit in the fridge for several hours.

    First time I have heard of red slaw being with ketchup. Every since I been in NC all red slaw has been with BBQ sauce. This is different for sure.
