Amazing Food Blogs

I recently read an article that attacked the food blog community, stating that it is a threat to the well-being of “real” food professionals. I won’t bore you with the angry onslaught, yet let me say this…

An irrational claim against a group as a whole, is a dangerously muddled cocktail of vanity and fear.

If culinary journalism can be taken down by a group of food enthusiasts, then I say it’s a pretty shoddy industry to begin with.

We food bloggers are a sorted lot.

Some of us blog as a hobby, after a long day at work. Some of us have managed to turn our passion into a home-based business. Some are talented photographers that blog about food because they love to shoot the things they eat. Some are chefs or extraordinary home-cooks that have had to learn how to use a camera. Some of us write about travel and restaurants. Many spend countless hours developing recipes, photographing meals before letting anyone touch them, writing long thought-provoking pieces, or short funny blurbs. Not to mention the time we spend spreading the word about our latest dish.

The point is, food bloggers are as different as our blogs, but we are all passionate about food. No one in their right mind would spend this unthinkable amount of time obsessing over it, without passion.

Many of us feel this is our contribution to humanity.

I’ll never win the Noble Prize, or find a cure for cancer, but if I can help someone across the country confidently create a sensational dinner, that brings smiles to their family, I’m a happy girl.

So I want to celebrate the food blogging community.

You provide steaming-hot inspiration to the home cook, and fresh weekly waves to the web surfer. I love you for it!

Today I’ve put together my very own blog crawl.  Some of these sites display incredibly elegant food photography, others tired-and-true easy-to-follow recipes, still others great personality and fun reads.

All of these offer something unique and are worth your time. …And in my mind, only improve the culinary community and industry.

Let’s read them, shall we?

Sommer, Thank you so much for writing this post. The article you speak of made me angry as well and I’ve been fuming about it wanting to respond but not quite feeling able to calmly put it into words. You’ve done if perfectly, persuasively and beautifully, with sincerity and passion. You rock!

What a fabulous resource, Sommer!!! I think the food blogging community has only elevated the appreciation of food as a whole. I know that I am in awe of the gorgeous photography and creative recipes I find on the food blogs I frequent. They inspire me to be a better cook and also to be a better photographer. :-)

Thanks so much for including me Sommer! I’m a little late commenting (I’ve been in newborn baby mode all summer…) but I agree. Food blogging is not only enriching the food community, but the internet as a whole! Bravo, my dear, and blog on everyone!

Everything you said is just perfect. I cannot imagine a better way to express how I feel about my job as a food blogger, and especially how upset it makes me when people act as though it’s not a “real job” that requires dedication, time, effort, and talent. Food bloggers are so often criticized, and there is a serious stigma surrounding food blogging that I still can’t understand. The point is to help people create something they will enjoy, just like we enjoy it… what could possibly be so dreadful about that?

I’m looking through the links you’ve posted now and am definitely excited to follow some new blogs!
